what is docomomo?
DOCOMOMO is a network of individuals concerned with documenting and conserving architecture and urban design of the Modern Movement. Founded in 1990 in the Netherlands, DOCOMOMO has active working parties in 45 countries. Members include architects, historians, conservators, researchers, urban designers, curators, preservationists, and other volunteers interested in the Modern Movement. The International Secretariat is located in Paris, France, and serves as the communications link between the national working parties and an International Council.

eindhoven statement
DOCOMOMO International’s primary goals are expressed as the Eindhoven Statement from the founding conference in 1990:

• Bring the significance of the Modern Movement to the attention of the public, the authorities, the professions and the educational community concerned with the built environment.

• Identify and promote the recording of the works of the Modern Movement, including a register, drawings, photographs, archives and other documents.

• Foster the development of appropriate techniques and methods of conservation and disseminate this knowledge throughout the professions.

• Oppose destruction and disfigurement of significant works of the Modern Movement.

• Identify and attract funding for documentation and conservation.

• Explore and develop the knowledge of the Modern Movement

mission
Our mission is to increase the awareness of regional Modern Movement resources through education, documentation, conservation, and advocacy.  We partner with other local, statewide, and regional preservation organizations and agencies to enhance public and professional appreciation of our Modern heritage.

docomomo_us was founded in 1995 at the first Preserving the Recent Past Conference in Chicago. As the official working party of the United States it sets policy, provides support to its regional chapters, and maintains an on-line register of early to mid 20th century sites in the United States.

docomomo_chicagomidwest As a regional chapter, our membership includes the Midwest states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, and Michigan. docomomo_chicagomidwest sponsors lectures, hosts tours, maintains a website and electronic mailing list, and publishes an e-newsletter to increase the awareness of the Modern buildings and sites in the Midwest. An important activity is the ongoing addition of resources to the online Register that is maintained by docomomo_us.
